Pioneers of the Puppet Musical

MONSTRO make puppet musicals for people of all sizes. Led by theatre-maker and composer Ben Glasstone and a bevy of the country’s finest musical puppeteers, we are dedicated to extending the language of puppetry and music theatre and to challenging the boundaries between theatre made for children and for adults.

MONSTRO‘s new show is called Bookstory.  It’s  a show about books, in which the main characters are…books.  After a successful Pilot Tour, beginning at Little Angel and taking in Brighton Festival, Pulse Festival and many others, the show has been extensively re-worked and is touring studio theatres and libraries through Autumn 2016, with support from Arts Council, England.

Ben and his key collaborators have a long association with Little Angel Theatre where he has composed, written and directed for many productions including The Tempest (co-production with Royal Shakespeare Company), Alice in Wonderland, The Giraffe, The Pelly and Me, Fantastic Mr Fox, The Night Before Christmas and many more. Ben led the creation of Little Angel’s acclaimed musical The Mouse Queen, which toured off-West End and off-Broadway in New York:

“…impossible for anyone, of any age, to resist …It’s a wonderfully inventive work that genuinely has something to say – and has terrific fun saying it. A joy.”
The Times
“…original songs so hummable West End composers ought to take note. Don’t bother about a child as a pretext: just go.”
Evening Standard

Many of the Mouse Queen artists have continued to collaborate since then, leading to the formation of MONSTRO (formerly Nonesuch) in 2012 to make more of this very playful and intimate kind of music theatre.
